Cochin Chicken

Cochin chicken is a beloved heritage breed known for its massive size, feather-covered legs, and incredibly gentle personality. Originating from China and introduced to the Western world in the mid-1800s, Cochins quickly gained popularity for their impressive appearance and calm temperament. These birds are often described as the “gentle giants” of the poultry world.

Cochins are large, fluffy birds covered in soft, dense feathers that extend all the way down to their feet and toes, giving them a distinctive, rounded look. They come in a variety of stunning colors, including buff, black, white, blue, and partridge. Hens typically weigh between 8 and 10 pounds, while roosters can reach up to 11 or 12 pounds.

While not the most prolific layers, Cochin hens produce a modest 150 to 180 medium-sized brown eggs per year. However, they are exceptional mothers and often go broody, making them a popular choice for those interested in natural incubation. Their calm, nurturing demeanor makes them ideal for raising chicks.

Cochins are well-suited to backyard flocks, especially in families or urban settings where temperament matters. They are extremely docile, friendly, and even enjoy being handled, making them a favorite for children and first-time poultry keepers. Though they tolerate confinement well, they also enjoy free-ranging at a leisurely pace.

These birds are hardy in cold weather thanks to their dense feathering, though care should be taken in wet or muddy conditions to prevent foot feather issues.
